Many individuals with round, chubby cheeks longing for more refined and sculpted facial features turn to buccal fat pad removal as a solution. This cosmetic procedure is designed to sculpt facial contours by reducing the volume of buccal fat pads within the cheeks. Also known as cheek reduction surgery or buccal lipectomy, this procedure can create a slimmer, more defined appearance in the midface area.

Am I a Candidate for Buccal Fat Pad Removal?

Ideal candidates for buccal fat pad reduction are individuals who are bothered by the appearance of overly full or chubby cheeks and desire a more sculpted facial contour. Candidates should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the procedure’s outcome, and be committed to following pre-and post-operative care instructions, including smoking cessation.

To find out if you’re a candidate for buccal fat pad removal and more about this procedure, call (512) 253-2845 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Weinfeld.

What Are the Benefits of Buccal Fat Reduction?

The primary benefits of buccal fat pad reduction include:

  • Facial contouring: This procedure reduces the volume of the buccal fat pads to create more sculpted and defined cheeks.
  • Enhanced facial proportions: Buccal fat pad removal can streamline the midface area, create a more harmonious relationship between facial features, and reveal the appearance of cheekbones.
  • Defined facial appearance: Slimmer cheeks help to achieve a more sophisticated appearance by removing excess fat in the cheeks that can contribute to a rounded or “baby-faced” look.

How Is Buccal Fat Pad Removal Performed?

Any successful surgery includes at least two steps: the consultation and the procedure itself.

The Consultation

Before you undergo buccal pad removal, a comprehensive consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Weinfeld, is necessary to discuss your concerns, goals, and expectations for this surgery.

The Procedure

Buccal pad removal is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general or local anesthesia with sedation. During the procedure, Dr. Weinfeld makes a small incision inside the mouth, near the back of the cheeks, to access the buccal fat pads.

He then carefully removes the appropriate amount of fat to achieve your goal. Dr. Weinfeld is extremely careful not to remove too much fat as this can create the appearance of premature aging. With care, a thinner and youthful appearance results without a gaunt aged appearance. Dr. Weinfeld tailors the experience to deliver positive results. Once the desired contour has been achieved, the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.

He will also assess your anatomy, skin elasticity, and overall health to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery. This meeting will help you to understand the potential results of your buccal pad removal procedure.

Combining Other Cosmetic Procedures With Buccal Fat Pad Reduction

Buccal fat pad removal can be performed as a standalone procedure or combined with other facial surgeries to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Common procedures that may be combined with buccal fat pad reduction include:

What Is Recovery Like After Buccal Fat Pad Removal?

The recovery from buccal fat pad removal typically involves some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the cheeks and jawline area. Patients should be committed to following Dr. Weinfeld’s post-operative advice carefully, which includes these five essential instructions:

  1. Take prescribed pain medication to manage discomfort.
  2. Eat a soft diet and avoid hard or chewy foods for the first week.
  3. Refrain from strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks.
  4. Keep your head elevated while sleeping to reduce swelling.
  5. Attending follow-up appointments with our surgeon to monitor progress and ensure optimal healing.

While all surgical procedures carry some risks, buccal fat removal is generally safe and effective. By adhering to Dr. Weinfeld’s post-surgical instructions, you can significantly reduce your chances of encountering any significant complications.

What Results Can I Expect From Buccal Fat Pad Removal?

You may see some improvement immediately after surgery. However, the final results of buccal fat removal become more apparent once the initial swelling has subsided, which may take several weeks. You can expect slimmer, more defined cheeks and a more sculpted facial contour at that time. While some results can be profound yet natural, in general subtle results are always better than an overdone look. Combining the procedure with fat grafting to the upper cheek and jawline, or even cheek implants and a chin implant, can further enhance the contouring impact.

Buccal fat pad removal is usually long-lasting and can significantly enhance the appearance of your face. To maintain your results, avoid significant weight gain.
