Men of all ages are seeking cosmetic treatments and surgery with increasing frequency. Why not? The benefits of increased confidence that accompany cosmetic procedures and surgeries should not be limited to women. Having said that, not all patients are the same, and thus, different considerations need to be made when a man is seeking cosmetic surgery.

What Male Plastic Surgery Do I Need?

In general, men tend to be more apprehensive and less comfortable expressing that a physical feature of their face or body is a source of angst. Men also tend to be less specific about the things that bother them and what they would like to be different. If it is not addressed, this communication gap can be a challenge in terms of identifying what procedure will make a male patient happy. Dr. Weinfeld is a skilled and patient communicator who spends the time needed to understand what male patients are trying to achieve with cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is a powerful thing, and good, receptive communication helps unleash that power to its fullest effect.

There are special considerations that need to be made in procedures for men. Below, these considerations are addressed in the most frequent procedures men seek. This list is not comprehensive; it merely lists the most common procedures. If you desire more information about the procedures listed or if you want to learn about a surgery that is not listed, please contact our office for a phone or in-person consultation.

Skin Care and Injectable Treatments for Men

It goes without saying that a man’s skin is different from a woman’s. Thus, the approach to skin care should be different. Our nurse skin care expert can help male patients navigate the abundant information on skin care and the numerous options to develop a customized and simple plan for men to get the most out of their skin care.

Can Men Get BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic reduces and eliminates wrinkles by weakening facial muscles in a controlled and temporary way. Men have larger and stronger facial muscles than women, and thus, men often need higher doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic to achieve the desired result. In addition, BOTOX® Cosmetic can have a shaping effect on the features affected by the muscles treated. This is important in the forehead and brow region. While women benefit from an arched brow appearance, this can look unusual in a man. Men generally look most natural with a straighter eyebrow.

The majority of the injectables are performed by Dr. Weinfeld. His solid understanding of male muscular anatomy and the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic help him shape facial features to get the best appearance for his male patients.

Can Men Get Dermal Fillers?

Facial fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, need to be administered to men in a way that addresses their masculine anatomy. Male facial tissues are often thicker, so increased filler volume is required to make a difference that can be seen externally. At the same time, because the male face has thicker tissues and more substantial boney structure, indiscriminate and overuse of fillers can make a man’s face look over-plump and heavy. Dr. Weinfeld is skilled at the strategic use of fillers in men to achieve maximum benefits while reducing the potential downsides.

Rhinoplasty for Men

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures overall. This holds true for men too. Rhinoplasty is no exception to the theme that cosmetic procedures for men need to be approached with the knowledge that there are special considerations for the male patient.

Rhinoplasty needs to be performed in a way that maintains the masculine nature of the nose. Thus, the male nose must not be de-projected excessively. The male nasal tip shouldn’t be over-rotated (pushed up). The nose of a man also shouldn’t be overly shorted.

The unique anatomy of the male nose also requires special considerations. The skin is often thicker, and so greater effort needs to be made to have the internal changes reflect on the outside. Furthermore, the cartilage and bone are stronger, and special attention needs to be paid to modifying those structures precisely to achieve the desired result.

Dr. Weinfeld is an expert in rhinoplasty and, thus, has the knowledge and experience to deliver what male patients want and need.

Eyelid and Eyebrow Rejuvenation for Men

The eyelids and eyebrows together are referred to the periorbital region. The male periorbital region is different from that of females. Accordingly, the anatomy that looks natural is different for men.

Can Men Undergo Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a procedure that shapes the eyelids, and it can be performed for male patients.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper lid blepharoplasty generally involves removing the excess skin that creates a hooded appearance and a tired look. In upper lid blepharoplasty, a small amount of excess fat may be removed or repositioned to further enhance shape. Because men rarely wear makeup, and thus, have limited camouflage or cover-up options, special attention needs to be paid to scar placement and scar quality in male patients. Additionally, excessive skin removal in men is more likely to lead to a surprised look and, thus, needs to be avoided.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower lid blepharoplasty addresses the lower lids with an emphasis on treating lower lid bags and excess skin when present. Male fat bags can be larger than those in women. The temptation to remove a lot of fat needs to be avoided in men. Given the increased amount of bone under the lower eyelid, excessive removal of fat is more likely to lead to a hollowed look in a man than in a woman. And again, men rarely use makeup, so scar placement needs to be chosen carefully in male patients and may be different than that of a female patient.

Can Men Get Brow Lift Surgery?

For both men and women, the tissues supporting eyebrow position weaken, causing the brows to sag. A brow lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to lift and shape the eyebrows for male and female patients. Sometimes, it is referred to as a foreheadplasty because it can have positive effects in the forehead as well, which is generally a reduction of horizontal lines.

Three important considerations need to be addressed in a brow lift for a man.

  1. Scar placement and quality needs to be strategic, given a man’s potential to have thinner hair as he ages.
  2. The male periorbital tissue is thicker and heavier than in a female, and the muscles are stronger. Thus, in a brow lift, a more robust method of fixation of the lifted tissues must be employed.
  3. Finally, a natural male brow shape is different than that of a woman. While an arched brow is often desired in the female face, males look more natural with a straighter, albeit lifted, shape to the brow. The male brow also naturally sits directly on top of the superior orbital rim (upper eye socket bone), and the female brow is often positioned higher than that bone.

Dr. Weinfeld completed extra training with two of the world leaders in oculoplastic/oculofacial surgery (surgery of the lids and periorbital region). Thus, he is well-suited to address the unique needs of male patients seeking cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and brows.

Fat Grafting/Fat Transfer for Men

With age, the loss of soft tissue volume, mostly in the form of fat, leads to a deflation effect. When combined with loosening skin that also occurs with aging, this creates facial sagging, deep lines, and wrinkles. Fat grafting is a powerful tool to add back some of the soft tissue volume. As discussed in the skin care and injectable treatments section above, a man’s facial anatomy is different than that of a woman. Fat grafting needs to be performed in a way to maximize benefits and limit downsides. The strategies are different and geared at using enough fat in the correct anatomic locations to bring about a result that shows through the thicker male skin. At the same time, we must be careful not to inject too much fat so the face doesn’t look overly plump and heavy.

Dr. Weinfeld has a long history of involvement with fat grafting research and has published several scientific studies on the topic. He also has many years of practical clinical experience with the technique, given that he was one of the early adopters.

Facelift and Neck Lift Surgery for Men

Males are seeking facelifts and neck lifts more frequently than in the past. A facelift and neck lift can bring about a younger appearance in the magnitude of 7 to 15 years depending on the individual. Males tend to experience slightly higher blood pressures in the time leading up to, during, and after the surgery. This elevated blood pressure, even if mild, can lead to increased bruising and, thus, longer recovery time and more significant side effects. Dr. Weinfeld and his team are attentive and skilled at addressing this issue in men. Men also differ from women in that they more often wear shorter hairstyles. This fact influences scar placement and quality so that scars are as inconspicuous as possible.

Gynecomastia Surgery (Correction of “Man Boobs”)

A variety of causes can lead to a male having excess breast tissue. This can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Gynecomastia surgery addresses this by removing excess tissue with both liposuction and direct surgical excision through small incisions, which are often difficult to see after a period of healing.

This procedure can be performed on both teenagers and adults. However, the older a patient is, the greater the challenge, given that the skin loosens, and obtaining natural skin shrinkage after removal of the tissue is less predictable. No matter the age of the patient, gynecomastia surgery is a very gratifying procedure for male patients in general.
